Does exploitation as children affect them in later years?

Does exploitation as children affect them in later years? Is it right to blame the media and the celebrities? Or are we responsible for others insecurities? Other's have blamed media and celebrities for causing children and adults to have low self esteem. Everyone should know that the blame can not just be put on Television; but everyone who is a part of this world. Some of our very action might trigger paranoia in others. There's no way to tell for sure; except for observing human behavior among  children.

I want to know this for future reference. At some point in life every one feels insecure. What I really wish to see is if these insecurities have anything to do with exploitation at a younger age. Such as beauty pageants ; are they teaching our girls to be confident and comfortable in their own skin or become like plastic dolls. This should interest others due to the high chances of them being able to relate to it. Other should want to know why children/teens and adults have suicidal thoughts . Why they turn to drugs and under go peer pressure?
